“A feather floating on the breeze is symbolic of our struggle to come to terms with destiny versus the importance of our life’s choices. The work implies that our destiny is tied to which way the wind blows—what happens may be purely accidental. I prefer to believe as St. Hildegard of Bingen; The feather flew, not because of anything in itself, but because the air bore it along. Thus, I am A Feather on the Breath of God.”
Debra lives in Lander, WY, although she considers herself a bit of a nomad. She served twenty-five years in the Air Force/Air Force Reserves retiring in 2007. Upon retirement she began pursuing her love of art full time. In 2011 Debra graduated with a BA in Visual and Performing Art-Visual Art from the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs.
During her travels, Debra fell in love with the art of decoys. She always wanted to try woodcarving and took her first carving class in 1998. Since then, Debra has been sculpting in wood, stone and bronze. Her favorite point of the process is when the subject of the sculpture emerges from the material she’s working with and takes on its unique personality.
