This collaborative work is the first for these two artists. The project started with an old beat up fiberglass canoe with rich, weathered surface texture. Their idea was to connect humanity with river systems along with everyday experiences with water. Sections of plastic water bottles alternate with sections of canoe, providing a graceful bend as well as representing our interdependence with rivers and their inhabitants.
Paddles and similar forms are used to create fins and a tail, while forms of a canoe’s yoke are transformed into barbells. The gestural paint application, a further collaboration with local artist Erok Johanssen, is inspired both by train graffiti (playing of the theme of transportation) as well as Claude Monet’s lily pond paintings.
